For sharp pain in the lower back and down back of legs, muscle pain Sciatica is a condition that manifests as radiating pain from the back either into the buttock and/or the lower extremity usually on the back and outward side.  It represents pain referred somewhere along the path of the sciatic nerve.

Symptoms of sciatica include discomfort, pain, burning, tingling, stabbing, aching anywhere along the path of the sciatic nerve (from the buttock, down the leg, into the foot, although the most commonly affected areas are the buttock and thigh).  In very severe cases the pain may be associated with weakness.
